- ➤ Publix will allow customers to openly carry guns in its Florida grocery stores after a state appeals court ruled the open carry ban unconstitutional — a spokesperson said the company will follow federal, state and local laws. Other stores including Walmart, Target, Winn-Dixie, Sam's Club and Costco have requested customers not to bring firearms into their premises. WESH
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Tropical Storm Jerry will bring heavy rain, rough surf, and localized flooding along the coast today as wave heights reach 5 to 6 ft with gusts of 15 to 20 mph. Clermont residents are experiencing light to moderate showers now, and officials say the storm—expected to strengthen into a hurricane by Saturday—may increase coastal hazards over the weekend. WESH
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Lake County Fire Rescue secured a $7.5M federal SAFER grant from Homeland Security to hire 36 firefighters over the next three years. The grant — which will add a third firefighter to 10 trucks and six backfill positions — is expected to reduce overtime and burnout among current staff. News 6
