COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Hunger Action Day — held on Sept. 9 — was organized by Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida to call for food donations, volunteer support, and other hunger relief actions. The event also began Hunger Action Month, which promotes ongoing community efforts to provide essential assistance every September.  WESH
  • Michael Austine, a Lake County Army veteran, is receiving a home makeover in Clermont after his roof began leaking—Habitat for Humanity coordinated with Janney Roofing as part of the Owens Corning Roof Deployment Project to replace the roof, remodel the kitchen, install new flooring and update windows. The roof replacement is expected to finish today and the interior work will be completed before the end of the month.  News 6
  • New Beginnings of Central Florida's pantry in Clermont is asking for donations as its shelves nearly empty- leaving local families without needed food. Residents can drop off staple items at the New Beginnings Thrift Store at 415 Citrus Tower Blvd from Monday to Saturday between 9:00 am - 5:30 pm.  South Lake Tablet

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Orange County announced it will soon begin constructing a one mile extension of New Independence Parkway connecting the 429 with U.S. 27 through Wellness Way to ease traffic, with completion expected in 2027—residents along Sawgrass Bay Boulevard are waiting for upgrades to the blocked Flemings Road Sawgrass Bay connection, with right-of-way votes set for September 16 and an estimated finish by November.  WESH
  • Clermont city council voted 4—1 to move forward with an ordinance that exempts American flag poles from height restrictions. Councilman Tod Howard said the change follows a complaint about the flag pole at Camping World and the proposal now awaits four amendments before a final vote to ensure proper engineering and FAA compliance.  News 6
