  • Clermont will present First Friday + Music on Montrose on August 1. The city organized the events for local residents.  South Lake Tablet

CRIME NEWS

  • Four undocumented Cuban nationals were arrested in an organized crime spree that targeted semi-trucks by stealing their electronic control modules (affecting 93 truck owners and causing over $750,000 in damage) and are now awaiting trial while authorities expect more charges.  Fox 35 Orlando

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • NASA says Florida residents can view the Perseid meteor shower that began on July 17 and will continue through Aug. 23 with its peak on Aug. 12 and 13 when roughly 25 meteors per hour may be visible under dark skies. The full moon on Aug. 9 may lessen meteor brightness.  WESH
  • Yesterday was declared a Severe Weather Warning Day in Central Florida—extreme heat made it feel like 110–115° and today is an Impact Day with triple-digit heat and scattered afternoon showers. Later in the week, temperatures will drop to around 96° with more rain forecast for the weekend.  WESH

HEALTH NEWS

  • Lake County EMS saw a 27 percent uptick in 911 calls for heat illnesses between June and July as a heat wave affected residents in Central Florida. Local roofing and landscaping companies have adjusted work schedules—providing water and ice—to help crews avoid heat exhaustion.  WESH
