CRIME NEWS

  • Jude Alexandre, 32, was sentenced to 35 years for second-degree murder after pleading guilty last month for shooting his girlfriend Miriam Ortiz, 43, in the driveway of her Clermont home in 2019—deputies said he shot her over a belief that she had stolen drugs from him and later fled to New York.  News 6
  • In February, six Clermont police officers responded to a murder-suicide at Cottonwood Apartments by entering an ambushed building where a gunman fired on them and came within inches of their shields—none were hurt and the department will send two officers for ballistic shield training.  News 6

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Clermont City Council voted on May 13th to move future meeting times to 3:00 pm beginning July 29—residents and Mayor Tim Murry said the change might limit participation. The council also discussed city leadership as deputy Dan Matthys, with 27 years of experience, could be considered for permanent City Manager—a formal transition plan will be presented on July 29.  South Lake Tablet
  • Today, the Lake County Office of Housing and Community Services announced a request for grant applications to fund youth prevention and intervention programs and human services programs that benefit at-risk individuals and families. Eligible organizations may apply for up to $25,000 per program with applications opened on May 5 at 8 a.m. and the deadline set for Wednesday, June 18 at 3 p.m.—submissions must be completed by then.  South Lake Tablet

  • Habitat for Humanity of Lake-Sumter is accepting applications for ten new homes built across Lake and Sumter Counties through its Home Ownership Program—applicants must meet credit, income, and work requirements to qualify for an affordable mortgage.  South Lake Tablet
