COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The 5th Annual Sips and Suds Fundraiser will take place on Sunday, May 18 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Lil Anthony’s Pizza — 205 US-27, Minneola, and all proceeds will benefit The Animal League, which rescues and rehomes animals.  South Lake Tablet
  • Mascotte Church at 15 N. Bay Lake Ave. will host its Second Annual Cake Bake-Off Contest on May 17 from 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm — local bakers must use homemade cakes with a full ingredient list to support allergy safety while competing for gift cards and medals. Contestants pay a $10 fee and community members may sample the cakes for a $5 donation.  South Lake Tablet
  • Clermont Garden Club members delivered fresh floral arrangements and gift bags with personal care items, sugar-free candies and pillowcases (requested by facility administrators) to 27 residents at Minneola Place. ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Florida Highway Patrol troopers said a 69-year-old bicyclist was hit and killed Sunday around 6:33 p.m. on County Road 473 in Lake County when his bicycle swerved into a southbound Toyota Tacoma—driven by a 61-year-old Leesburg man who was not injured—and the man was pronounced dead at the scene.  WESH

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Abdiel Hernandez, a 16-year-old from Tavares, has been named the 2025 Ray Aviation Scholarship winner by EAA Chapter 534 in Leesburg. He will begin flight training at Sun Air Aviation at Leesburg International Airport with a $13,000 grant to help earn his Private Pilot’s License.  South Lake Tablet
  • Lake County 4-H club helps youth gain hands-on skills by offering school clubs, after-school programs, and camps where over 5,500 kids learn agriculture, public speaking, and leadership; the club known as 1776 emphasizes independence and responsibility—values that shape tomorrow’s leaders.  South Lake Tablet

  • Mayor Tim Murry invites Clermont residents to his monthly open forum community lunch on May 6 at noon at Amores Italian Restaurant (2608 South Highway 27 #100, Clermont) where he will share updates on city plans and listen to resident concerns.  South Lake Tablet

  • Orlando businesses will offer a range of Mother's Day events + gift ideas on May 11 including brunches, craft workshops and adventure tours.
