Good morning, Clermont.

On April 12 in Clermont, deputies responded to a call about a suspicious person and found 39-year-old Eric Escobar pounding on a door; when he refused to follow commands and pulled a handgun, a deputy shot him, leaving Escobar dead and the officer on administrative leave pending review (by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office).

Newly released bodycam footage shows deputies fatally shot Eric Escobar after he reached for a gun outside a Clermont home on April 22—officials are investigating the incident while residents remember his erratic behavior.

A Clermont man, Eric Escobar, who had mental health issues, was shot and killed on April 12 after he did not follow commands from a Lake County deputy—his stepfather said he sought help without success.

Stand-alone emergency rooms have grown in Central Florida since Florida repealed the Certificate of Need rule in 2019, and these facilities now offer 24/7 care for emergencies like heart attacks, strokes, and serious injuries.

Orlando Health, AdventHealth, and HCA Florida Healthcare together run 26 freestanding ERs and plan to build more as the region’s population and tourism continue to rise — a move to improve access to urgent care.
