COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Members of the Clermont Woman’s Club attended the District 7 FLIGHT TO HONOR fundraiser in Orlando on a Fly In Festival of Fashions that supported Florida State President Sara Dessureau’s project to fly female veterans to Washington, D.C. The fundraiser aimed to raise $150,000—enough to cover travel costs for the veterans’ trip.  South Lake Tablet
  • The Kiwanis Club of Clermont will host its annual Prayer Breakfast on May 1 at 7:15 a.m. at The Wesley Center — 715 W. Juniata Street, where keynote Paula Whetro from Building Blocks Ministries will speak and raised funds will support programs for adults with developmental disabilities.  South Lake Tablet

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Last Sunday a rollover crash at 3 a.m. on SR19 near Howey-in-the-Hills made a Jeep Grand Cherokee hit a pole and roll over—three of the four women died and one is in critical condition—while local leaders held a vigil to support grieving families as Florida Highway Patrol looks into why the car lost control.  WESH

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Clermont Historical Society is featuring a steamboat anchor on display at Historic Village donated by Donald Pitts and found in the Ocklawaha River. Visitors can tour all the village buildings on Saturday and Sunday from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm at 490 West Avenue with a $5 admission for those 12 and older.  South Lake Tablet

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Lake County Fire Rescue warned residents near the Tavares Solid Waste Facility that smoke from a mulch fire burning since Saturday may drift over the area—fire crews and the Florida Forestry Service are working to separate burning from non-burning mulch and advise residents with emergency respiratory issues to keep windows closed.  WESH

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Real Life Christian Academy girls’ varsity softball team has a regular season record of 10 wins and 2 losses and will play six weeks of home games at Legends Way Ballpark—then compete in the Sunshine State Athletic Association Tournament on April 11 and 12. Coach Jeff Carney credits the team’s historic success to players such as pitcher Daniella Delgadillo.  South Lake Tablet
